Unfortunately for many children terminal illness or special needs are a reality. Most are bed-ridden, arms held in place with tapes and tubes, in a hospital room. Dr. Baudino, a board certified dance/movement therapist and licensed clinical psychologist, who brought the first Dance/Movement Therapy to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, helps these children feel like kids again and not patients with her Dance/Movement Therapy sessions.
Dance/Movement therapy, an adjunct to childhood medical treatment, involves movement ranging from simple breathing to jumping, running, gross motor skills and even watching movement—anyone can participate. Dr. Baudino’s Dance/Movement Therapy is offered in small groups or at the bedside. It supports wellness by providing the children the opportunity to escape from their confines, gain control, ease discomfort, express their feelings about their illness, and to be a child, not a patient.
Dr. Baudino calls the outcome of this therapeutic modality “Having Body Knowledge”. “The Body Knowledge enables children to focus on their feelings within the body to work through psychological challenges and integrate experiences relationships and the environment,” she explains. “With Body Knowledge children are better able to transform a seemingly unchanging and life threatening illness into a place of creativity, support and connection. The child feels seen, safe and like a child again able to express their inner thoughts and needs,” Dr. Baudino noted.
